The short answer is: Yes.
No technology is perfect. Invisible fences break down but don't worry. Most of the time, the repairs are cheap and easy.
In the last few years, more and more pet owners are buying invisible fences. Sure, they work...most of the time. Here are three of the most common reasons why invisible fences stop working:
- Cable Power. Invisible fences operate by running electric or solar energy from a central energy source, the energizer, to cables surrounding your home. The cables need to be able to hold power or they're worthless. Unplug the system, walk around your yard, and check the cables. If there's a break, you know the cause of the problem. If there's not, borrow or buy a voltmeter and check to make sure they're working properly. On rare occasions, the wires may be intact, but may simply have stopped working.
- Collar Reception. The collar is equipped with its own technology. It doesn't always function properly. Test the connection between the collar and the fence. If the collar is blinking or doesn't turn on, you may just need to replace the batteries. If the power isn't a problem, but the collar has a problem syncing, you may have to reset it. Instructions on how to do this should be in the instruction manual that came with your fence.
- Energizer. The energizer is the energy hub of the fence. Unplug it, detach it from the cables, and test to make sure it's working properly. If the cables hold power, and you don't see any breaks, you may have an issue with the circuit board. This can be replaced, but the repairs can be pricey.
